April 2011 Tracklist

Had a great idea sent to me by Matt Jessen to post an announcement of the tracklist, and then add the actual tracklist to the comments. This way you can view it at your own discretion instead of having it slapped across your face. Check the comments for the 4/11 tracklist.

  2. Overall: Great start to this project.

Variety: Excellent. Everything from country to almost-non-whiteboymusic.

Originality: Fantastic. I had 3 of these songs, One of which (Mr. Grieves) I was happy to revisit.

Titus Andronicus - This song I could do without. The instrumentation is great, but the vocals rattle the fillings in my teeth.

Califone - Very nice and refreshing.

Kurt Vile - Great. Excellent follow to the previous tune.

The National - These guys have been going around, and I am happy to hear more of them.

Jose Gonzalez - Hootie if Hootie was good. I have the Massive Attack origianl, and I like this just as much.

Spoon, Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra - Thumbs up.

The Knife - Maybe my favorite on the disc. Great lead-up to this.

    Tom Waits - Tom Waits

Smog - Never heard of them, glad that I did. Eddie Vedder with Waits's band.

Buke & Gass - Thought this was a funky Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Spaceman 3 - see Titus Andronicus

Great start to the mission. Lots of bands I will explore further. Thank you.

  3. Deleted the last post because I'm apparently too dumb to edit: it went as follows...

Jessen - I see what you did there. and I like it. simple, easy, and respectful. I hope that we all can give/receive this kind of feedback. Goes a long way in showing that this effort does not fall on deaf ears. Well done, good sir.

I am encouraged by this reception. I was battling internally on how to best approach attaining the proper levels of good music vs. something that might be new to most. What I want to avoid is playing something obscure just for the sake of it being obscure. You helped me realize that I need to just stop over thinking it and get to producing a quality mix. And that's what I'll hopefully be distributing soon. It'll be different, I can assure you of that.

  4. I really enjoyed the bullet point feedback from Matt. As far as the music goes I'm still listening to the mix so it can sink in but overall I really enjoyed the overall composition of the mix, it really did have a flow as if it were put together by the bands themselves.

Matt if you're interested in The Knife (who I am even more thoroughly convinced I should check out)I recommend Röyksopp. Karin Dreijer Andersson the vocalist from The Knife helps them out on a few tunes.

I'm pretty excited for the mixes to come. At the same time, Clay spoke of "good music vs. fresh material", I know that's going to be on my mind until December but I'm hoping my track list just falls into place over time.

  5. I didn’t see this post earlier, so I’m a bit late in responding. I appreciate you leading this thing off and have been enjoying the mix on my MP3 player for the past couple weeks.

    Highlights (for me)

Titus Andronicus - I dig the drunken rambliness (new word) of this one, like if Shane McGowan were only half as drunk and half as Irish.>

Mission of Burma - I've always liked their clean sounding (post)punk.

Crocodiles - I'd never heard this and thought it was a Jesus & Mary Chain outtake or something. I'm a sucker for 90s era Brit/psych/shoegazer etc. stuff though, so thumbs up!

Sonic Youth - Like this song and very much like the album it's on.

Kurt Vile - This one reminds me of Richard Ashcroft/The Verve, which is a good thing.

    Spoon

Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra - A really good soul song and the second one here that I've heard on Eastbound & Down (unless my memory fails me). Kenny Powers fan?

    Tom Waits

Buke & Gass - Thanks for this. Evidently, the buke is a modified baritone ukulele. It looks as cool as it sounds, kind of like a little person's ghee-TAR.

    <3 GBV and Spaceman

Hats off, Heff. I like the intermingling of the old and the new, as well as the pacing of the disc. I'm a new fan of Buke & Gass and it turns out they're playing here next Wednesday so I might just have to go check them out live!

I'm also excited, this month, to hear the eclectic stylings of Clay. Oh, and don't censor yourself for us, man. I know I won't be censoring myself when I send out my Double Disc Magnum Opus Noise Rock Opera Mix this fall! J/K (sorta).

  7. Brian, that Buke and Gass album, Riposte, is easily one of my favorite releases from last year. Thanks for posting that NPR link. It really showcases what a great sound they have, especially for a duo. Apparently she has pretty serious carpal tunnel and the modified baritone uke is one of the only instruments she can manage. He plays a git-bass ala Mark Sandman.

I had to double check with google, and must award you double pop culture points for labeling Kiss the Sky as an EBAD song. Wikipedia gives credit to the first season. It seems like that song was in just about everything else under the sun too. Might as well have been performed by Moby. A friend turned me on to emusic about 6 years ago and I stumbled across Shawn Lee in one of those "if you like this, you might like..." links. Ahhhh emusic, RIP. You used to be awesome. Now you're just itunes jr.

  8. LOVE the Titus track. The Monitor is a great album and I am never disappointed when I make that selection on a road trip. Your mix had a lot of tracks from bands that I had heard about but had not had a chance to sink into -- which is right on target for this project, I suppose.

For instance: Spaceman3. I love Spiritualized and assumed I would dig Spaceman3. Nice to have that thought confirmed.

The Sonic Youth song was interesting. I have generally been disappointed by my forays into their stuff despite the critical praise, but I liked this track.

The track by the Knife was a grower, which usually end up as my favorites.

I also liked the Devendra track. I don't think I can take more than a song at a time with him before I get burned out, but he has a couple of great numbers, this one included.

All in all -- thanks for getting this started.
